Taron Dickens and Catamount Football Face Fighting Camels of Campbell

By Coach Steve
The WCU Catamount football team travels to Buies Creek to take on the Campbell Fighting Camels out of the CAA in another CAA vs SoCon in-state matchup at 3:30 EST on FloSports. Despite sharing a 1-3 record with WCU football, the Fighting Camels look like a team that can compete in this game. The Camels held undefeated URI to only 17 points through three quarters, and came within five points of beating fellow SoCon member Furman. Campbell starting quarterback Kamden Sixkiller is a legitimate threat in both the pass and run game, while runningback JJ Cowan is an absolute freight train when he wants to be. But the biggest threat for the Camels on offense against this Western team is going to be Randall King, given his playmaking ability, and the holes where the WCU secondary should be. The Catamounts have been gashed through the air this year by opposing QBs, and I don’t expect Saturday’s matchup to be any different.
But it might not even matter, because Taron Dickens is now officially QB1 for the WCU Catamount football team. Dickens absolutely torched Samford’s defense in his return last weekend, with 582 yards passing and another 42 yards rushing to go along with it. Tomorrow is a good test of whether or not Dickens should be involved in the Walter Payton Award discussion. Spoiler alert, the answer is yes. The biggest benefactor of the return of Taron Dickens was, by far, Camury Reid. Reid had three touchdowns on only four catches for 107 yards, which is a pretty insane stat line. I think it is safe to say, there are no questions in Cullowhee about the Catamount’s offense. The only question remains, can the defense get enough stops? This is likely going to be the theme of the season moving forward. Even before Dickens returned, the offense was still effective, scoring no less than 31 points in FCS action. The Catamount secondary is in for a long day at the offense this weekend against a dynamic quarterback and wide receiver duo like Sixkiller and King.
