
Rock Hill, S.C. — Winthrop has officially announced their men’s and women’s basketball non-conference schedules and several games stand-out among the rest.
Men’s Basketball Looks to Rebound After Heartbreaking Loss in Big South Championship
To kick-off Mark Prosser’s fifth season as head coach for Winthrop, Rock Hill will play host to the Field of 68’s Opening Day Marathon as the Eagles clash with the Queens University Royals in the Battle for I-77. This game will take place at 8 AM on November 3rd, marking the first game to open the college basketball season.
For the first time since December 28, 2001, Winthrop will head up to Fairfax, Virginia to play George Mason on November 7th. The Patriots won that meeting 86-66 before finishing 19-10 under Jim Larranaga and appearing in the NIT Tournament. Winthrop finished 19-12 that season and got blown out by Duke in March Madness, 84-37.
The Eagles will play a in-season home-and-home with arch rival Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. The first game will take place on November 11th at Conway with the return game taking place on December 6th in Rock Hill.
Homecoming on November 15th will see Winthrop hosting Mercer, marking the “official” kick-off of the home stretch this season. The Eagles won the previous meeting 102-97 in Rock Hill last season behind a Kelton Talford double-double.
Three days after homecoming, Winthrop will travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to take on Coach Calipari and the No. 11 Razorbacks. The one and only previous meeting between the two teams took place on November 19, 2004 with the Hogs pulling away 72-49. The Eagles went on to finish the season with a 26-7 record, losing in the NCAA Tournament 74-64 to Gonzaga.
The following Sunday, Winthrop will travel to Jackson State for the first meeting between the programs.
On November 25, the Eagles will take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln for the first time in almost exactly 24 years. The last meeting saw the Huskers pull away in a narrow 73-65 win.
November 29th will see the SC State Bulldogs come to town. Winthrop has won the previous two meetings by an average of 19.5 points.
The December stretch will see Winthrop return a game to LIU on December 2nd after last season saw the Eagles win 87-65.
The Eagles will host Coastal, Toccoa Falls, and Bob Jones to cap off a three-game homestand.
To finish the 2025 non-conference slate, the Eagles will travel to Grand Forks, North Dakota to take on North Dakota, come back home to play Clinton College, and finally cap everything off in Lubbock to take on the No. 10 Texas Tech Red Raiders in the Adonis Arms Classic.
Women’s Basketball Looks to Continue Push for Dominance
For the first time in program history, the Eagles will travel to Milwaukee to take on Marquette and follow that trip up with a visit to Chicago State. The previous meeting with Chicago State saw the Cougars grab a narrow 45-41 win.
Winthrop will host Newberry and Queens in back-to-back home games to begin the homestand.
On November 19th, No. 1 South Carolina will host the Lady Eagles for the fifth time. The last matchup took place in 2015, with the Gamecocks winning 86-37.
Winthrop will travel to Nashville to particpate in the Music City Classic. Teams are still to be determined.
The Eagles will host UNC-Wilmington on December 7th and look for their first win against the Seahawks since 2019.
Winthrop will cap off the non-con slate with a trip to Coach Meek’s alma mater, Tennessee, followed with a visit to Charlotte in the Queen City and UVA in Charlottesville. Winthrop is looking for its first win against all three teams.
