STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – Penn State’s defense didn’t wait long to introduce itself under new coordinator Jim Knowles. The second-ranked Nittany Lions overwhelmed Nevada 46–11 on Saturday in Beaver Stadium, forcing three turnovers and holding the Wolf Pack to 78 rushing yards.
“Our job is to be great,” Knowles said ahead of the game. “We don’t need to compare ourselves to anyone else. We just need to play to our standard.” (Sun-Gazette)
Defense sets the tone
On Nevada’s opening possession, Dani Dennis-Sutton forced a fumble that set up Nicholas Singleton’s 1-yard touchdown. Just minutes later, Zane Durant intercepted a tipped pass, leading to a 12-yard score from Kaytron Allen.
“That’s exactly how you want to start a season – with energy, turnovers, and our backs finishing drives,” head coach James Franklin said (Black Shoe Diaries).
Allar sharp, Hudson shines
Quarterback Drew Allar was nearly flawless, going 22 of 26 for 217 yards and a 31-yard strike to transfer wideout Kyron Hudson, who led all receivers with 89 yards.
Freshman King Mack ignited the crowd with a 73-yard kickoff return, setting up a field goal from Ryan Barker. By halftime, Penn State led 27–3.
Depth delivers in fourth
With the game in hand, Franklin handed the reins to true freshman Ethan Grunkemeyer, who marched the offense 94 yards and finished it himself on a 6-yard touchdown run. The sideline mobbed him in the end zone, a fitting exclamation point on the rout.

What it means
Penn State’s defensive identity under Knowles looked disruptive and aggressive from the start, while the offense clicked behind Allar’s accuracy and the backs’ power.
“It’s one game, but we played fast and physical,” Franklin said. “I thought our defense really set the tone, and our offense stayed efficient. That’s a good formula.” (CBS Sports)
The Lions (1–0) now turn to next week’s matchup against Florida International, looking to build on an opener that left little doubt.
