SPARTANBURG, S.C. — As fall camp gets underway, Wofford football enters 2025 with something it hasn’t had in years: a true sense of identity.

Third-year head coach Shawn Watson has guided the program through two seasons of rebuilding, and now the Terriers appear to be turning the corner. With a veteran-heavy roster, a competitive camp atmosphere, and a renewed belief in what Wofford football is supposed to look like, expectations are starting to shift.

“Four days into practice, I like our talent,” Watson said after the first week of camp. “It’s been very competitive on both sides. Our leadership by the seniors and fifth-year seniors has been great, so I’m really pleased with where we’re at.”

That leadership core includes running back Kyle Parsons, defensive back C.J. Coombes, linebacker Elijah Washington, and cornerback J’vion Luster — all of whom were named to the 2025 preseason All-Southern Conference team. It marks the highest number of preseason selections for the Terriers since 2018 and reflects the experienced foundation Watson has built around.

Rather than reshuffling schemes or introducing new terminology, this year’s camp has focused on situational awareness, discipline and physicality — the traits Watson has emphasized since taking over in 2023. Those qualities are starting to show up in practices that feel faster, more cohesive, and more competitive.

Watson said earlier this spring that the team’s next step isn’t about installing a system — it’s about refining the culture. “I think you’ll see a really fast, physical football team in the fall,” he said. “We’ve got talent at the skill positions.”

So far, that blend of returning experience and off-season additions — including 14 new players from the high school and transfer ranks — has created strong internal competition. Players who have been with the program through its rebuilding years are setting the tone, helping to integrate the newcomers and build accountability.

Wofford opens the season Aug. 30 on the road at South Carolina State, then returns to Gibbs Stadium to host Richmond and Mercer. With SoCon play beginning early, the Terriers will need to show growth quickly — but the foundation appears stronger than it has in recent memory.

“There’s a real sense of urgency with this group,” Watson said. “And that’s exactly what you want going into the season.”

Watson’s third year may not come with bold headlines or flashy expectations, but behind the scenes, the pieces are coming together — and Wofford looks ready to take the next step.
