The South Carolina Gamecock lady softball team, under first year coach, Ashley Chastain Woodard, has done something that not many fans would have thought were achievable. In just her first year as head coach, the Gamecocks are in prime position to possibly have a bye in the SEC tournament and potentially host a regional. Given where the Gamecocks softball team has been over the past 22 years, some would have thought this was unthinkable.

Ashley Chastain Woodard finishes her first year as the head coach of Gamecock Softball with a 39-14 record and finishes 13-11 in the SEC. It’s the 2nd winning SEC season in 22 years for the Gamecocks. What a start to the Ashley Chastain Woodard era in Columbia! https://t.co/dh53Cto6ak pic.twitter.com/o4wwXzXXuS

Firstly, let’s break down this previous tweet. The Gamecocks went 39-14 this year with wins against UNC, Duke, and went toe to toe with the powerhouse, Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns. While you may not understand the magnitude of this from the outside, first year head coaches sometimes need time to build a roster and a culture. However, that did not slow down this Gamecock Softball team this year finishing with only their second SEC winning record in the last 22 years. That is nothing short of incredible and hopefully shows that great things are coming for the program. The team just finished a series with Alabama who won the first game 13-1 but were able to overcome and win both games of a doubleheader today to take the series.

Women’s sports have gained a ton of attraction over the last few years and success only makes that attention easier to come by. I certainly will be paying attention to the lady Gamecocks’ softball team as they prepare for an SEC tournament with the potential of hosting a NCAA regional. Congratulations to Coach Chastain Woodard and all the ladies on the team for an outstanding season and I will be paying attention intently.
