This past week was a big week in the Big South Conference. We had some fantastic showdowns and the standings are starting to take shape. As we move on to towards the Big South tournament we take the time to review the week past and give a preview of what is coming up.

Last week the conference leader Longwood played host to Radford on Wednesday night where they would squeak out a win 56-51. Amor Harris was virtually on a tear in this game has she was able to post up 15 points while Kiki Mcintyre would bring in 14 points of her own along with 3 three pointers. Radford would take a 2 point lead into halftime but in the end Longwood would prove to be too much as they closed out strong to take hom the win. Also on Saturday Longwood would fall short against the USC Upstate Spartans as the home team would take a 1 point win. This game was neck and neck all the way through but in the the Spartans would prove that while they have had a tough season that they are much better than their record shows. Longwood’s shooting woes would be their downfall as they would shoot just 19-69 from the field.

High Point would also hope to continue their winning as they would play in 2 big time games. In the first game they would play host to the USC Upstate Spartans. Many would look at this as a trap game as they prepared to travel to Rock Hill and play Winthrop. However, the Panther showed that they would not look past the Spartans. They would dominate the game 84-31. This wold prove to get them ready for the big game against Winthrop who is the number 3 team in the conference. The Panthers would continue to play hot and beat a very good Wintrhop team at their house 73-55. This High Point team is really coming on strong and playing their best basketball at the right time. Nevaeh Zavala would lead all scorers with 20 points and 3 three pointers.

In other action for the week we would see the PC Lady Blue Hose play 2 home games against Charleston Southern and Radford. The Blue Hose continue to struggle with the turnovers. The slow starts are really what did them in as they would drop the game to Charleston Southern 71-58 and 62-50 to Radford. Also Charleston would continue a strong weak as they would finish off UNC Asheville 57-52. Charleston Southern has won 3 out of their last 4 and will have a big game Saturday against conference leading LongWood on Saturday.

This week should be a week where we contine to sort through the Big South standings. Longwood will host Gardner-Webb on Wednesday and then will play the hot buccaneers of Charleston Southern Saturday. High Point is hoping to catch Longwood this week in the standings as they will host PC at home Saturday. The last time these 2 met it was a tough outing for PC as they fell to a hot shooting panthers team but this weekend they hope to bounce back and pull off the upset. Also this week Winthrop is in action against PC Wednesday and Gardner Webb Saturday. Both will be tough games for Winthropp as they have struggled on the road and coach Sardin has said that she hopes to make it a difficult environment for them Wednesday.Charleston Southern also is hoping to make the standings interesting but before they face Longwood on Saturday they must take care of business against USC Upstate.

Weekly awards go out to Gardner-Webb’s Ashley Hawkins for Big South Player of The Week and Cassie Gallagher of USC Upstate was named Freshman of the week. Hawkins would come up huge against UNC Ashevile as she would put up 26 points and became the first Big South player since 2022-2023 to record a double with atleast 20 pts and 10 rebounds.Gallagher was key in the Spartans big upset win over Longwood as she would record 11 points and 4 rebounds as the USC Upstate would hand Longwood their first conference loss.
