Purple Pounders Prevail: Central Defense Overwhelms Brainerd in Region Showdown!

Central’s defense put on a masterclass last night, leading to a commanding shutout victory over the Brainerd Panthers. A few weeks ago, Lito and I caught the Purple Pounders in action against an undefeated Marion County and a solid 3-1 Soddy Daisy team. After watching them play, I told Lito that Central had the potential to surprise some teams this season. Fast forward to last night: the Purple Pounders has notched upset wins over Tyner and showcased their offensive prowess by scoring an impressive 62 points against Sweetwater last week.

This week, they faced a Brainerd Panthers team that was injured and depleted but still motivated. The Panthers were missing their starting quarterback and top receiver, along with several other players in street clothes, so it was clear that stopping the high-scoring Purple Pounders would be an uphill battle.

After winning the toss, the Panthers deferred to the second half. Central got the ball first and moved it well on their opening drive, but Brainerd’s defense rose to the occasion, making a crucial fourth-down stop on Central’s star, Ronye Watson. The Panthers took over on offense but quickly stalled, leading to another fourth-down stop by the Purple Pounders.

The first drive was marked by big hits from both teams. Midway through the first quarter, Central regained possession around midfield. Unfortunately for them, the drive stalled again after a near interception on a dropped bubble screen. The very next play saw Brainerd’s star defensive player and Week 1 #SOTGMVP, Mike Brooks, deliver a crucial third-down sack on Central quarterback Cayden Jones.

Central managed to pin the Panthers inside the 15 with a solid punt. However, Brainerd’s offensive coordinator, Damon Smith—whom SOTG Smoke likes to call a “mad scientist” for his clever play designs—pulled out all the stops. With their best wide receiver playing quarterback, they executed some effective misdirection to gain a crucial first down. A well-timed naked bootleg saw the Panthers’ QB Willie Graves power his way close to the sticks, and a horse-collar tackle added 15 more yards, giving them their best field position of the quarter.

The Panthers were in business and knocking on the door. They ran a series of read-option plays and handed the ball off toPanther’s star Mike Brooks, bringing them to the 3-yard line as the quarter ended. But then, disaster struck. Brooks seemed to score on the next carry, but his knee was down at the 1. The following play looked promising, but a false start and a couple of unsportsmanlike penalties derailed the drive, leaving them unable to convert on fourth down.

From that point on, Central took control of the game. Cayden Jones connected with #SOTGMVP Ronye Watson on a stunning 40-yard bomb down the sideline, capping the drive with a short touchdown run that drew a flag for a celebration handshake with his teammates.

While Lito and I made our way to the concessions for hot chocolate, Central struck again: Ronye Watson executed a trick play and threw a touchdown pass, followed by a successful two-point conversion, extending the lead to 14-0 by halftime.

That last touchdown seemed to take the wind out of the Panthers’ sails, especially for a defense that had held Watson and Houston Boykin in check for a good part of the game. SOTGspoke with Central’s defensive coordinator, who noted that he had to get his guys to regroup at halftime because they initially thought Brainerd would roll over. Instead, the Panthers hit them in the mouth early, which he said was something they needed to give his team a wakeup call if they have playoff aspirations. After halftime, Central’s defense, led by hard-hitting MJ Bell and playmaker Houston Boykin, put points on the board almost instantly. A jet sweep by the Panthers was met with a vicious hit from MJ Bell, who stripped the ball. Boykin recovered it and raced around 35 yards for a touchdown, extending the lead to 21-0.

Brainerd’s offense struggled for the remainder of the game, and Central cruised to a 27-0 victory. While the Panthers’ defensive effort deserves recognition, their lack of depth made it challenging to keep pace with Central. However, forcing two interceptions and several tackles for loss provides a bright spot for their young defense to build on moving forward.

Meanwhile, Central now stands at 3-1 in the region and heads into a much-needed bye week to prepare for a tough matchup against the Hustlin’ Tigers at Howard, followed by a closing game against McMinn Central, who lost a close one to the Tyner Rams last night.
