Zebulon, NC- The Carolina Mudcats (77-50) played host to the Delmarva Shorebirds (52-77). The Carolina Mudcats will face the Fredericksburg Nationals (73-56) in the divisional round of the playoffs. The Mudcats sent Manuel Rodriguez (4-6) to the mound who entered tonight with a 3.30 ERA in 92.2 innings pitched. The Shorebirds sent Jacob Cravey (0-9) to the mound who entered tonight with a 5.54 ERA in 79.2 innings pitched. The Mudcats called up RHP Jaron DeBerry before today’s contest.
The Mudcats stranded 2 runners in scoring position in the bottom of the 3rd when Luis Castillo popped out to second baseman Steven Ondina. Delmarva struck first in the top of the 4th when Elis Cuevas scored on a single to center by Fernando Pegureo which gave the Shorebirds a 1-0 lead. Delmarva struck again in the top of the 7th when Edwin Amparo hit a 2 run home run which increased the lead to 3-0. Delmarva shut down the Mudcats in the 9th as they earned the 3-0 win.
Manuel Rodriguez pitched 2 scoreless innings where he only allowed 1 hit. Jacob Cravey threw 4 scoreless innings where he only allowed 4 hits. Yeiber Cartaya threw 4 scoreless innings where he only allowed 4 hits. Jeison Pena threw 2 scoreless innings innings where he only allowed 1 walk. Joe Glassey threw 1 inning where he faced the minimum.
The winning pitcher for the Shorebirds was Yeiber Cartaya (2-0) for his 4 inning performance. The losing pitcher for the Mudcats was Melvin Hernandez (0-1) for his 4 innings where he allowed 1 run on 4 hits. The save went to Joe Glassey (2) for his 1 inning where he faced the minimum. Marco Dinges and Blayberg Diaz both recorded 2 hits in their outing. The Mudcats are back in action on Saturday against the Shorebirds at 6:30pm.
Manager Stanley met with the media following the game. When asked about the amount of runners the Mudcats left on base Manager Stanley said:
“Yeah, it happens sometimes would have been nice to get a big hit, get things going, but didn’t happen tonight. So we’ll get back out there tomorrow.”
When asked about the performance of Manuel Rodriguez Manager Stanley said:
“Yeah, it’s kind of what we’ve seen from him all year. Throwing strikes, throwing the right pitch at the right time, executing. Really happy to see him get back on the mound and pitch that way.”
