The quarterback battle in Pittsburgh remains open as the regular season approaches. The Steelers revamped their quarterback room by acquiring Justin Fields and Russell Wilson in the offseason. They have yet to officially name a QB1—or have they?

So far this preseason after three weeks, there isn’t much to separate the two. Fields has had more passes completed and attempted, but their overall QB ratings are very similar. Fields is 19/27 (91.4 rating) and Wilson is 10/12 (92.0 rating) on passing attempts thus far. So how can we already guess who the starter is?
Russell Wilson or Justin Fields?

Just this past season, the Steelers had to decide between Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph, and Mitch Trubisky. They ultimately chose Trubisky, largely due to the fact that he had been in the biggest moments of the group, having led and been a “franchise quarterback.” While it’s been a few years since we’ve seen his best, I would say Russell Wilson fits that description more than Justin Fields at this time. While Fields may have a higher ceiling and more years left to play, the Steelers have shown in 50/50 calls that they go with experience.

While nothing is set in stone, it appears Russell Wilson will likely get the nod for week 1. Will he be a good fit for the young and new WR core? We will have to wait and see.
