Zebulon, NC- The Carolina Mudcats (28-21) played host to the Augusta GreenJackets (30-20). The Mudcats entered tonight 2.5 games back of the Fredericksburg Nationals (30-20) in the second half standings. The Mudcats sent Jason Woodward to the mound who entered tonight with a 0.00 ERA in 2.0 innings pitched. The GreenJackets sent Luis Arestiguesta to the mound who entered tonight with a 2.25 ERA in 4.0 innings pitched.
The Mudcats got on the board in the bottom of the first when Yophery Rodriguez scored on a throwing error by Luis Arestigueta which gave the Mudcats a 1-0 lead. The Mudcats grew their lead in the bottom of the second when Daniel Guilarte scored on a sacrifice fly to deep center by Luis Castillo which increased the lead to 2-0. The Mudcats struck against in the second when David Garcia scored on a line drive single by Juan Baez which expanded the Mudcats lead to 3-0.
Augusta responded in the top of the 3rd when Austin Machado scored a bases loaded walk in a 3-2 count which cut the deficit to 3-1. Then, Luis Guanipa was scored on a 3-1 fielders choice which cut the deficit to 3-2. Augusta continued scoring when John Gil was scored on a sacrifice fly to center that tied the game at 3-3. Augusta scored in the top of the fifth when Patrick Clohisy scored on a bloop single by Will Verdung which gave Augusta a 4-3 lead.
The Mudcats responded in the bottom half when Daniel Guilarte scored on a bases loaded walk in a 3-2 count which tied the game at 4-4. The Mudcats left the bases loaded when they flew out to 3rd base. The Mudcats continued to score in the bottom of the sixth when Eric Bitonti scored on an error in right field which gave Carolina a 5-4 lead. Then, the Mudcats added a no doubt 2 run home run to right field by Luis Castillo which increased the lead to 7-4. The Mudcats continued to score in the sixth with no doubt a 2 run home run by Reece Walling to right field which increased the score to 9-4.
Pitching dominated for both sides after the 6th inning. Albert Rivas threw 2 scoreless innings where he allowed no walks and no hits. Morris Austin threw 2.1 scoreless innings where he only allowed 2 hits. Gerson Calzadilla threw 1 scoreless innings where he allowed 2 hits. The Mudcats slammed the door in the ninth to earn the 9-4 win.
The winning pitcher for the Mudcats was Morris Austin (9-4) for his 2.1 innings performance. The losing pitcher for the GreenJackets was Kaden Morton (0-4) for his 2.1 innings performance. The GreenJackets committed 4 errors in tonight’s contest. This led to only 3 of the Mudcats 9 runs being earned runs.
