Zebulon, NC- The Carolina Mudcats (57-38) played host to the Charleston RiverDogs (46-48) in a Tuesday Evening Contest. The Carolina Mudcats sent Manuel Rodriguez to the mound who had a 3.48 ERA in 82.2 innings pitched entering tonight. The Charleston RiverDogs sent Gary Gill Hill to the mound who had a 2.69 ERA in 77 innings pitched entering tonight. This will be the first game since Cooper Pratt and Tyler Bryant were called up to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. This is also the first game since Eric Bitonti, Josh Adamczewski (adam-chef-ski), and Anthony Flores were called up from the ACL Brewers.
In the top of the first, Adrian Santana scored on an error by shortstop Filippo Di Turi that gave Charleston a 1-0 lead. Charleston added to the lead in the top of the 3rd with a no doubt solo home run by Narciso Polanco which increased the lead to 2-0. A 3-6 double play denied Charleston a run in the top of the 5th that kept the score at 2-0. In the bottom half, the Mudcats got a run back on a single by Reece Walling that score Josh Adamczewski which cut the lead to 2-1. Reidy Mercado entered the game in the top of the 6th for Yhoswar Garcia.
Manuel Rodriguez pitched 6 inning where he only allowed 2 earned runs on 5 hits.
In the top of the 7th, Charleston added to the lead with a 2 run home run to right by Enderson Delgado which increased the Charleston lead to 4-1. In the bottom half, the Mudcats left runners on the corners when Reidy Mercado flew out to center to end the threat. In the bottom of the 8th, a ground out by Luis Castillo stranded Filippo Di Turi at 3rd.
Gary Gill Hill pitched 7 innings where he only allowed 1 run on 6 hits. Brailin Rodriguez pitched 2 innings where he only allowed 1 run on 3 hits.
Charleston added to their lead in the top of the ninth with a double by Raudelis Martinez that scored J.D. Gonzalez which increased the Charleston lead to 5-1. Then, a single by Jose Perez scored Raudelis Martinez which increased the Charleston lead to 6-1. Charleston slammed the door in the bottom of the 9th to earn a 6-1 victory
Dalton Fowler threw 1 scoreless inning were he only allowed 1 walk. Luis Hernandez pitched the 9th inning where he did not allow a run.
The wining pitcher for the RiverDogs was Gary Gill Hill for his 7 innings of 1 run ball. The losing pitcher for the Mudcats was Manuel Rodriguez for his 6 innings where he only allowed 2 earned runs. There was no save awarded in this game. Reece Walling went 2 for 3 with 2 singles and a walk. The series continues Wednesday evening at 6:30 pm at Five County Stadium.
After the game Charleston RHP Gary Gill Hill spoke to the media. When asked about why he was successful in his 7 inning performance he said:
“Just attacking, getting ahead early just on strikes, and then coming back with, like, my off speed, and just attacking with the fastball.”
When asked about his success in the head to head match up with Luis Castillo he said:
“It felt good. Just went after him and just forced him to swing the bat and just attack him early.”
