Zebulon, NC- The Carolina Mudcats came into this week’s series in a 3-way tie for first place with the Fredericksburg Nationals and the Down East Wood Duck. The Mudcats looked were looking to build separation between itself and the other teams in the North. Manager Nick Stanley had his first home series against rival Down East. The Mudcats played 6 games this week against the Wood Ducks. By the end of the week the Mudcats went 5-1 to create separation between them and everyone else.
The Mudcats did not have a strong start to the week as they dropped the Tuesday game 4-1 to the Wood Ducks. The Wood Ducks pitching dominated game 1 of the series not allowing a run until the 8th inning. The Mudcats scored their only run in this game on 4 walks. Osbriel Mogollon threw 4 scoreless innings in relief of starter Manuel Rodriguez. The winning pitcher was Ryan Lobus while the losing pitcher was M. Rodriguez. Luke Savage earned a save for his 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball.
The Mudcats rebounded on Wednesday with a 7-6 victory over the Wood Ducks. The story of this game was the 7 combined errors in this game. The Mudcats controlled this game by getting back in front whenever Down East tied the game. Cooper Pratt led the charge on offense with 3 RBIs. The winning pitcher was Morris Austin while Justin Sanchez received the lost. Blake Whiting was credited with a save in this game.
Due to rain on Thursday, the 3rd game of the series was played on Friday. The Mudcats dominated the Wood Ducks to win 6-0. Pitching was dominate in this game only giving up 2 hits over 7 innings. Fielding continued to be a problem for the Wood Ducks as they had 4 errors. Luis Castillo and Tayden Hall both had 2 RBIs in game 1 of the doubleheader. The win was credited to Yujanyer Herrera while the loss went to Kyle Larsen.
Mudcats pitching continued to dominate in game 2 of the doubleheader winning 2-0. The Mudcats main offensive strike was a Daniel Guilarte solo home run. Bishop Letson, K.C. Hunt, and Harrison Durrow combined for 7 scoreless inning. The winning pitcher was Hunt while the losing pitcher was William Bormie. Durrow was credited with a save for his 2 scoreless innings.
The Mudcats won 7-5 over the Wood Ducks on Saturday. The Mudcats offense was powered by a 7 run inning in the bottom of the 4th. The offensive highlight of the inning was a Yophery Rodriguez triple. Jesus Rivero was the winning pitcher and Josh Trentadue was given the loss. Bayden Root received the save for his 1 inning of relief to finish the game.
The Mudcats finished the series with a 6-4 win on Sunday over the Wood Ducks. The Mudcats pitching dominated early not allowing a run in the first 7 innings. That included 6 scoreless inning from Yorman Galindez and Osbriel Mogollon. The main offensive highlight was Castillo’s 2-run home run. Mogollon earned the win while Luis Valdez was credited with the loss.
The Mudcats next series is on the road at the Augusta Green Jackets. This series will last from Tuesday April 16th- Sunday April 21st.
