The NY Jets defense turned in an outstanding performance, holding the Falcons to 3.03 yards per offensive play in a 13-8 loss on Sunday. This is only the 12th NFL game in 2023 where a defense held an offense to an average of less than 3.1 yards per play.

Against the Falcons the Jets became the first team all season to lose with its defense turning in this type of performance. So far, the other 11 teams all won their games. In fact, two full calendar years of football to find the last time a team lost a game holding its opponent to under 3.1 yards per play in a game.

Further underscoring how rare this is, since 2018 NFL teams are 48-4 in game where they have held the opponent to the 3.1 average. The Atlanta Falcons are now 6-6 for the season and leading the NFC South and are in control of their own destiny heading into a matchup this Sunday versus Tampa Bay.
