As we near the midway point of the NFL season (yes, football season is nearly halfway done) one thing becomes more and more apparent with each passing week.
We don’t have a clue of how the NFL season will go. The media, sportsbooks in Las Vegas, and even the players can’t predict the unpredictable.
Three of our top 5 ranked teams lost last night, with the Dolphins falling to the Eagles and the Bills and 49ers surprisingly dropping contests against the Patriots and Vikings, respectively.
While predicting the madness of the NFL may be an exercise in futility, we’re always up for some fun futility here at Greenville Sports Media. So, here are the GSM NFL Power Rankings for Week 8.
1. Kansas City Chiefs (Prev. 1)
Hands down the safest bet in Vegas to go to the Super Bowl again. Mahomes and Kelce cannot be stopped, and the Kansas City defense has been rock solid thus far.
2. Philadelphia Eagles (Prev. 4)
With a big Sunday Night Football victory over the Dolphins, the Eagles have seized temporary control of the NFC.
3. San Francisco 49ers (Prev. 2)
The 49ers slipped up for the second straight week in Minnesota on Monday night football, but it’s not time to panic yet.
4. Miami Dolphins (Prev. 3)
The Dolphins explosive offense was slowed by Philadelphia’s defense, but the Dolphins should be fine. The Dolphins will need to win big games at some point if they wish to top Buffalo in the AFC East.
5. Baltimore Ravens (Prev. 9)
The Ravens were the clear winners of Week 7, dominating a very solid Lions team. Baltimore has all the pieces for a deep playoff run this season.
6. Dallas Cowboys (Prev. 7)
Coming off a bye
7. Jacksonville Jaguars (Prev. 8)
*Hums* Just keep winning, just keep winning, just keep winning, winning, winning
8. Buffalo Bills (Prev. 5)
The Bills lost an ugly one to a bad team on Sunday. Consistency must be found if the Bills want to find success this season.
9. Detroit Lions (Prev. 6)
One loss does not kill a season, but being absolutely blown to smithereens by the Ravens on Sunday certainly brought the first real sign of adversity for a Lions squad that had been cruising to begin the season. Only time will tell how they respond.
10. Cincinnati Bengals (Prev. 10)
Coming off a bye.
11. Seattle Seahawks (Prev. 11)
While it wasn’t exactly pretty, the Seahawks did what they had to do to beat a Cardinals team that has been surprisingly scrappy thus far this season. Tougher tests lie ahead, but the mood is positive in Seattle right now.
12. Cleveland Browns (Prev. 13)
The Browns are an extremely confusing football team. From the inconsistent play of the defense to the odd Deshaun Watson situation, everything about the Browns is out of the ordinary. That said, they are winning, so whatever works I suppose.
13. Pittsburgh Steelers (Prev. 14)
They aren’t going to get any style points, but the Steelers have quietly amassed a winning record. Their defense is elite, and their offense has the potential to be better than it has been.
14. Los Angeles Chargers (Prev. 12)
While the Chargers didn’t look the best on Sunday, the fact that they were facing the Chiefs in Arrowhead Stadium must be taken into account. That said, the Chargers are 2-4, and cannot afford any more slip-ups.
15. Houston Texans (Prev. 16)
Coming off a bye.
16. New Orleans Saints (Prev. 15)
For 3 quarters, the Saints offense looked ineffectual against the Jaguars on Thursday Night Football, but a 4th quarter explosion to make the game close should have Saints fans feeling slightly better about their teams chances in a weak NFC South division.
17. New York Jets (Prev. 18)
Coming off a bye
18. Indianapolis Colts (Prev. 20)
Star RB Johnathan Taylor started to shake off the rust, and backup QB Gardner Minshew looked more than capable as the Colts hung with Cleveland on Sunday. There’s reason for some optimism in Indianapolis.
19. Los Angeles Rams (Prev. 17)
With a close but inevitably flat loss to the Steelers on Sunday, the Rams are left facing more questions than they have answers for at the moment as they stand with a 3-4 losing record.
.
20. Tennessee Titans (Prev. 19)
Coming off a bye.
21. Atlanta Falcons (Prev. 23)
Despite Bijan Robinson curiously not playing much, the Falcons got away with the victory over their division foes in the Buccaneers.
22. Tampa Bay (Prev. 21)
Despite Bijan Robinson curiously not playing much, the Buccaneers could not defeat the Falcons in an extreme “mid-off”, falling 16-13 as they delve back into a state of mediocrity.
23. Minnesota Vikings (Prev. 29)
With an impressive primetime win over the 49ers, the Vikings have thrust themselves back into the outskirts of the NFC wildcard picture. There’s no telling if they will keep the momentum rolling, but in a weak NFC a playoff appearance is not entirely out of the question.
24. New England Patriots (Prev. 27)
Bill Belichick got his 300th win with a big upset win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Now back to a 2-4 New England reality check.
25. New York Giants (Prev. 28)
They were the winning team in the worst football game to date this season.
26. Washington Commanders (Prev. 24)
They were the losing team in the worst football game to date this season.
27. Arizona Cardinals (Prev. 26)
The Cardinals always seem to stay close enough to make their opponents nervous, but then eventually lose. The looming potential return of Kyler Murray will be fascinating to watch in Arizona.
28. Denver Broncos (Prev. 32)
They won, but the real winner here isn’t anybody that had to watch that dumpster fire of a football game.
29. Green Bay Packers (Prev. 22)
The youngest team in the NFL is beginning to look like what they are. Wild inconsistencies in play are completely unsustainable for a successful NFL football team. It’s time to embrace the fact the Packers are in rebuild mode.
30. Chicago Bears (Prev. 30)
QB controversy brewing?
31. Las Vegas Raiders (Prev. 25)
They lost to the Bears. The Raiders can’t even use the backup QB excuse because the Bears were also playing their backup. Not a lot of bright spots to take away from that game.
32. Carolina Panthers (Prev. 31)
Coming off a bye
